What New York takes from your pay
- New York's withholding table has thirteen bands, and the rates do not simply climb — they dip and spike.
- That is deliberate: bands at 11.44% claw back the benefit of the lower rates from high earners, so the average rate lands where the state wants it.
- A single filer gets $7,400 off the top, plus $1,000 for each allowance claimed.
- If you live in New York City, the city charges its own income tax on top of this, roughly 3.1% to 3.9%, which is not included here.
- New York also deducts Paid Family Leave from your pay — a small percentage set each year, which this calculator does not include.

What changed for 2026
On a $75,000 salary in New York, take-home pay is $17.08 higher per paycheck than in 2025 — about $444.00 over the year.
- The standard deduction rose to $16,100 for single filers, so less of your pay is taxed.
- The Social Security wage base rose to $184,500, so higher earners pay the 6.2% on more of their income.
How the calculation works
- Start with gross pay. Your salary divided by the number of paychecks in the year, or your hourly rate times hours worked.
- Subtract pre-tax deductions. A 401(k) contribution lowers the income that federal tax is calculated on — but not the amount FICA is charged on.
- Apply federal income tax. The IRS percentage method: annualise your pay, then run it through the Publication 15-T withholding schedule. The first $7,500.00 is withheld at 0% — that band stands in for the standard deduction — and the rates step up from there. Divide the result back down to one paycheck.
- Apply FICA. Social Security takes 6.2% up to the $184,500.00 annual wage base; Medicare takes 1.45% with no cap, plus 0.9% more on wages above $200,000.
- Apply New York state tax. New York takes its own allowance off your pay first, then applies rates from 3.9% to 11.7% to what is left — so the share of your paycheck that goes to the state is lower than the headline rate.
Questions
- Does New York have a state income tax?
- Yes. New York uses a progressive scale, with rates from 3.9% to 11.7%. Only the income inside each band is taxed at that band's rate, so your effective rate is lower than the top one.
- How much is $75,000 a year after taxes in New York?
- A $75,000 salary in New York works out to about $2,164.20 per paycheck paid every two weeks, or roughly $56,269.10 a year, for a single filer with no pre-tax deductions. That is an effective withholding rate of 25.0%.
- Why is my actual paycheck different from this estimate?
- Your employer withholds based on the W-4 you filed, and may also deduct health insurance, retirement contributions, garnishments or union dues. This calculator uses the IRS Publication 15-T percentage method with standard assumptions, so treat the result as an estimate.
